Buffalo and Lion hunting in the Porga Hunting Area of Benin

Hunt Antelopes, Buffalo, Lion and Roan in West Africa

Big Game & Antelope hunting in the Savannah of Benin

Benin was a French colony until 1960 and is located in western Africa on the South-facing coast of the Atlantic Ocean, sandwiched in between Togo and Nigeria. The country is slightly larger than Cuba and slightly smaller than the State of Pennsylvania. All hunting takes place in the savannah county in the far north. Safaris begin and end in the country’s largest city Cotonou. Hunting in Benin is physically demanding, as much of it must be done by tracking in thick bush. The savannah temperatures, especially in late season, often exceed 100º F.

Our partners have been organizing safaris in Benin for more than 20 years in Porga hunting zone, located to the Northwest of the country on the border of Pendjari National Park. In May 2014, the Benin government renewed their lease for another 10 years (until 2024).This superb zone covers almost 200,000 acres best hunting ground.

This bushy savannah territory is a rich hunting ground for Buffalo and Roan Antelope. They have shot 10 buffalo out of the top 30 on SCI’s West Africa list, which speaks to the quality of trophies found in this zone. The other animals which are allowed for hunting are Lion, Hippopotamus, Western Kob, Western Hartebeest, Nagor Reedbuck, Sing-Sing Waterbuck, Harnessed Bushbuck, Oribi, Western Bush Duiker, Red Flanked Duiker, and Warthog.

Regarding Lion hunting, the Benin government gives out very few quotas. This region has the unique trait of having very large Lions that quite often possess a mane that is relatively large for Western Africa. These Lions are hunted only through tracking. The professional hunters are assisted by exceptional teams of trackers who will surprise you with the quality of their tracking. This hunt is athletic and requires good physical condition.

Accommodation is provided in the very comfortable tented Rocks Camp. It is made up of 6 spacious tents, each with en-suite bathroom, equipped with fans overlooking the plains.
